Trattoria Sostanza

The old world Italian charm makes this trattoria a favourite for locals and tourists. It’s a ten-minute walk from the Duomo and gets crowded fast so make sure you have a reservation. The interior hasn’t changed much throughout the years and the waiters wear old-fashioned uniforms that are quintessentially Italian. Some of the best dishes to try are the chicken breast cooked in butter, Florentine beefsteak, and tortellini in broth.

La Giostra

Just seven minutes walking distance from the Duomo is La Giostra. It was once a storage location for a carousel in the 1700s, so the aesthetic is somewhat quirky and different than the norm. With colourful stained glass doors, brick walls, candlelit tables, and amber lighting, this restaurant is one of the cosiest you’ll find. It has a history of being owned and run by a prince and his noble family, making this restaurant truly something special. This place is well-known on the tourist trail, but that doesn’t mean that the quality of the food suffers. In fact, they are known for their delicious dishes like the spinach gnocchi and lobster spaghetti. Make sure to pair your meal with the house Chianti and end your experience with the tiramisu.

All'Antico Vinaio

If you want to get your hands on “the best sandwich in the world” you’ll want to make a stop at All'Antico Vinaio. It’s just an eight-minute walk from the Duomo and is one of the most popular places for street eats in Florence. It’s so popular in fact that they’ve opened pop-up locations in New York City and Los Angeles! Paninis are the thing to get here, and there are so many varieties that you’ll need to visit more than once. Their use of Schiacciata bread, assorted cold cuts, and homemade spreads with truffle and artichoke take their sandwiches to a whole new level.

Trattoria 4 Leoni

Well known to both locals and tourists, this restaurant is just a 12-minute walk from the Duomo. This place is a bit off-the-beaten-path but has built up a reputation so good that it can be hard to get a table if you don’t reserve in advance. While dining, make sure to try their famous pear and gorgonzola pasta or the Tuscan beef stew. You can also try the pasta with truffles, pasta pomodoro, and the Trippa alla Fiorentina if you’re feeling adventurous (it’s tripe.)  Make sure to order a bottle of Chianti, ask for the outdoor seating area, and enjoy a fine meal with someone you love. It’s slightly pricey but worth it for the atmosphere, pleasant service, and the quality of the food.

Florence is teeming with noteworthy restaurants but if you’re spending time near the Duomo, you’ll want easy access to some of the best. Whether you visit all of these spots or just one, you’ll get a meal you won’t forget.
