Villas in Cortona

VillasAreasAboutFAQTravel Guides

Cortona looks like every postcard of Tuscany you’ve ever seen. It’s the quintessential hill town, making it an absolutely beautiful place to base yourself while visiting this region of Italy.

It was featured in the movie, Under The Tuscan Sun, and is made up of historic, medieval structures. Soaking up the culture and history is the thing to do here, so spend plenty of time wandering around the town to check out the attractions.

Start by visiting the Museo Diocesan, a historic church full of religious artwork. Then spend some time in the archaeology museum, the Gothic church of San Francesco, and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. Visit the Sanctuary of Santa Margherita, do some people watching at the Piazza della Repubblica, see the Fortress of Girifalco, and check out the remains of the Etruscan Tombs.

About Cortona

Best Time To Visit Cortona

The best months to visit Cortona are April, May, June, September, and October. This is when the weather is at its best but is also when the tourist crowds are largest and when the prices are higher. July and August are the two months when the weather is at its hottest and stickiest, so this may not be ideal for travellers who don’t like the heat. While winter isn’t the best time to visit, there will be fewer crowds and cheaper prices so keep that in mind.

How to Get There

Cortona can be reached by plane if you’re travelling from Perugia, Florence, Pisa, and Rome. If you’ve rented a car, the city can easily be reached from Rome and Florence by taking the A1 Superstrada del Sole highway. Visitors can take a slow train from Rome and reach Cortona in under three hours or the fast train to reach it in under two. A train from Milan or Venice will take about two hours and a train from Florence will take an hour and twenty minutes. Many of the rail stations in Tuscany offer bus services to Cortona that run frequently and can be cheaper than the train.
