Grosseto can be considered a hidden gem in Tuscany as it’s overlooked by many tourists.

While there aren’t many main tourist attractions here, this city is certainly worth a visit. In fact, travellers who are more interested in authentic, Italian experiences may like Grosseto more than the touristy destinations.

While it may not be a tourist destination, there’s still plenty to do while visiting. Start off at the Palazzo Aldobrandeschi, the home of a once noble family in Tuscany. It’s a neo-gothic building that is more than a thousand years old but was rebuilt in the 20th century. Then head over to the Archeologica di Roselle, the Etruscan ruins that are older than those of Pompeii. It’s 100 acres and was once home to more than 1,000 residents. There are walking trails around the area that allow you to spend some time outdoors while learning about ancient history.

Don’t leave without seeing the Grosseto Cathedral, which was built between the 12th and 14th centuries, as well as the ancient Medicean Walls. If you have some time, stop into the Maremma Museum of Archeology and Art, and take a few moments to relax and people-watch in Piazza Dante. No matter what you decide to do in Grosseto, you can be sure you’ll be treated to beauty and culture along the way.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit Grosseto is between April and June because the weather isn’t too hot and there is hardly any rain. If you want to experience the colours of fall, make your way to Grosseto between October and November but keep in mind that fall is often the rainy season. Also, note that the seasons with the best weather often attract the most tourists. If you want a trip that’s less crowded and slightly cheaper, consider visiting Grosseto in the offseason.
