With fewer crowds and lower humidity, visiting Venice in September is a must. You’ll be treated to stunning sunsets, warm weather, interesting events, and plenty to see and do. If you’re making your travel plans for Italy, and you can get some time off in September, it’s a great month to explore the beautiful city of Venice. 

Venice Weather in September

The weather in Venice during September is warm but without the same humidity levels of the summer. Towards the end of the month, the skies tend to get slightly cloudy, and you may even experience a slight chill as autumn weather gets closer. The average temperature is 24°C, with humidity levels ranging from 90% to 55%. On average, it rains 9 days out of the entire month so you shouldn’t have to worry about too many rainy days.

Festivals and Events  

Venice International Film Festival 

This famous festival takes place over eleven days and brings in both local and international stars. Celebs can be found all over the city, and at the end of the festival, one film will win the grand prize. You can catch movie screenings and celebrity sightings throughout the event.

Venice International Short Film Festival

If you’re a serious movie fan and want to see some lesser-known films, this is the festival for you. It takes place during the first week of September and shows off shorts, offers panels with actors, producers, and directors, and has film contests.

Regata Storica di Venezia 

This is the most popular gondola race in Venice and takes place in early September. The teams will dress in traditional costumes and race their gondolas along the Grand Canal. There will be food, music, and plenty of activities to accompany the main race.

Things to See and Do in Venice in September

  • Mark’s Basilica: This beautiful piece of architecture was created in 1092. It is one of the most famous sites in Venice as the church is full of ornate detail, Byzantine artworks, and sculptures.
  • Mark’s Square: This is the most famous piazza in Venice and is easy to see when visiting St. Mark’s Basilica. It’s an extremely important part of Venice and its history, and is in an ideal location, right across from the Grand Canal.
  • Grand Canal: This is the largest canal in all of Venice and it’s the most bustling. The massive canal is lined with more than 100 historic buildings from the 13th century.

  • Consider booking a hotel that’s near a water taxi stop so you can get around Venice quickly and easily.
  • Try visiting the outer islands to taste the seafood.
  • Offline a Google Map so that you can find your way around even if you don’t have WIFI access.
  • Pack earplugs as it may be loud outside of your hotel.
  • Pack a nice outfit or two as Venice is a stylish city.

If you want to visit Venice but aren’t sure which month is best, choose September. Between famous film festivals, beautiful scenery, and traditional gondola races, you can’t go wrong during this warm and sunny month.
